“TRICK or TREAT? False Claims or Real Benefits…

“TRICK or TREAT? False Claims or Real Benefits…
(the frightening reality of vacuum marketing)

In honor of Halloween, I always like to address some of the spooky, freaky and downright scary aspects in the world of vacuuming! What do I find to be the scariest? FALSE MARKETING CLAIMS!!

Disappointing, perhaps; But scary? You would think that spending as much time with vacuum cleaners as we do would make us numb to some of the more disgusting aspects of their existence. On the contrary: We’ve become hyper aware of how different machines work, how they often don’t work, and how their performance sometimes differs greatly than claimed or expected. What makes a false or misleading claim scary is the consequence the user may suffer from believing it!

Following are some CLAIMS attached to certain vacuum cleaners. See if you can guess which claims are a “TRICK” (as in totally bogus or just misleading) or a “TREAT” (that is, a feature that really has value.) THE ANSWERS MAY SURPRISE YOU!

“So powerful it can pick up a Pick up a bowling ball!” Answer: TRICK
This one has been around forever, and is just plain hysterical. Godfreys used a bowling to demonstrate the suction power of its vacuums, the use of the funnel-type device at the end of the hose is the key. The funnel cups around the bowling ball providing a suction cup-like effect, truly requiring only the slightest amount of vacuum to provide the seal. This is NOT a great indicator of suction, let alone cleaning performance. In fact, this little has so little effect on the cleaning performance of most vacuums on the market.

“No Loss of Suction” Answer: TRICK
This is Dyson’s famous line. The company did suffer some slight legal trauma over this claim…they now have to include some fine print that supports the point. But the mighty Dyson can and will lose suction eventually. The tag line is not exactly trickery, but too many people make the errant assumption that they don’t have to wash the vacuum’s filters or empty the dust collection bin regularly. If this required at-home maintenance is neglected, the poor Dyson suffocates and just won’t suck anymore. That equals a dirty house.

“No expensive bags to replace” Answer: TRICK
Define expensive! Many bagless vacuums are advertised using this lie – I mean line. The majority of these machines utilize a pleated HEPA filter in the dust collection bin, which serves to separate the dust from the clean air inside the vacuum (which a bag would normally do.) The trick is that these filters are not free! They need to be replaced every 6 months to one year, which can cost you the same annually (and sometimes up to twice as much) as disposable paper vacuum bags. Lastly, the long term expense you really have to consider is the vacuum itself. Since most bagless vacuums manage dirt so poorly internally, their motors tend to short out much sooner than their bagged counterparts…replacing a whole vacuum frequently is what really gets expensive!

So what’s the moral of the story? Don’t believe everything you see on TV or a vacuum’s packaging (at least not without doing a little research first!) If you rely on an advertised feature working exactly as claimed, please consult an expert to make sure that it can live up to your expectations. Look at the KEY WORDS in the claim. Are the terms clearly definable and provable? Do they even seem like an accurate method for measuring the vacuum’s cleaning performance? If it seems too good to be true, it just might be (or at least not without paying the price of extra money or your time.)

Happy Vacuuming.

Mowhawk soft carpet and difficulties in vacuuming?

If you haven't heard of it yet, you will soon. It's the fastest growing
innovation in carpet manufacturing since Marco Polo returned from the
east with woven rugs made of silk. Acceptance of this new style of
carpet is overwhelming. Consumers love the softness. The first time I
touched it I had a desire to take off my shoes and socks and sink my
bare feet into its extravagance. But understand, the days of "just any
old vacuum cleaner will do" are over! While impressively luxurious,
these new ultra-soft carpets can take extra care to clean. Be
forewarned! Many traditional cleaners are virtually impossible to push
across this carpet. The carpet is so soft that most upright vacs "sink
in" and the vacuum locks to the floor like one big 240 volt suction cup.
Fear not! Armed with the proper cleaner these carpets are easy to
vacuum.

The trend toward softer carpet started a few years ago. Demand and
manufacturing have now exploded. When ultra-soft carpet was first
introduced manufacturers targeted the top of the market and the product
carried a high price. This trend is now shifting. Manufacturers are
introducing soft carpets at lower price points utilizing cheaper
materials in lighter weights. Therefore a concern that was once reserved
for extravagant residences can be and will now be found in more modest
homes.

The introduction of softer yarns in carpeting has led to the re-use of
an old industry term "denier" and DPF (denier per filament) to quantify
softness. Denier is a numeric calculation for yarn. The "denier" of a
fiber is the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of yarn. The larger the
denier, the thicker the yarn. DPF represents the size of an individual
filament that makes up yarn. The lower the DPF, the softer the fiber.
Carpets used in homes have traditionally had a DPF of 12-18. Commercial
carpets can have a denier as high as 22. As the demand for softer
residential carpets has grown, the DPF has dropped. The new ultra-soft
carpets sold today have a DPF of 3.5 to 4.5.

That means a typical strand of yarn made from the new super-soft fibers
has 3-4 times as many filaments as its predecessors. Traditionally a
strand of yarn might have 120 filaments. Compare that to 700+ filaments
in a strand of ultra-soft carpet yarn. Here is where the "challenge to
clean" concept starts making sense. With 3+ times more filaments there
is more surface area. More surface area creates more drag. More drag
makes a vacuum nozzle harder to push and pull. More surface area makes
it harder to pull air through the carpet. This creates more vacuum
lock-down. More surface area/drag makes brushrolls bog down and even
stop.

To make matters even more challenging, carpet manufacturers are "beefing
up" their ultra-soft carpets. A few years ago a carpet with 50-60 ounces
of yarn per square yard was considered lavish. There are new Super-Soft
carpet introductions with 100 ounces of fiber! The introduction of less
expensive ultra-soft fibers (not nylon) means that there will be very
reasonably priced 60 and 70 ounce ultra-soft carpets on the market very
soon.

Most carpet manufacturers are now selling soft carpet. The two biggest
carpet manufacturers, Shaw and Mohawk, report brisk sales of their soft
carpet. Both companies report that they are receiving calls from
consumers about vacuums and vacuuming.

Choosing the right SEBO / Kleenmaid Vacuum Cleaner Bags?

This video will help explain which Sebo vacuum cleaner bags is right for your Sebo or Kleenmaid vacuum cleaner.

Cleaning Dyson Vacuum Filters

We could all do with a little ’pick me up’ from time to time – to help us recharge our batteries and be more efficient. Well, the same goes for our Dyson vacuum cleaners.

Dyson vacuum cleaners are created with pre motor filters so they need to be kept clean but not replaced annually like some other bagless vacuum cleaners, they just need some TLC.

Cleaning your Dyson filter every few months will ensure improved performance and a much cleaner home.

The filters on Dyson’s upright and canister models are the same and work in the same way, but accessing them is different.

  • Check your vacuum cleaner is switched off – unplug it from the wall
  • Remove the canister from your Dyson
  • Open the top lid of the canister – this is where the filter is stored
  • Remove the filter housing which holds the filter and cage or mesh tab
    • Upright cleaners: pull out the dirt canister
    • Canister cleaner: remove the plastic cover from the base
  • Pull out the mesh tab or cage to remove the filter
  • Run warm or cold water through the filter or cage – follow directions on the filter itself
  • Wipe filter with your hands under running water – do this until water from the filter runs clear
  • Leave the filter to dry for 24 to 72 hours
  • Check it’s completely dry before putting it back into your Dyson vacuum cleaner as use of a wet/damp filter may damage the vacuum cleaner.

With your Dyson firing on all cylinders, you should be good to go for the next few months.

How to remove stain out of carpets?

How many headaches can a carpet stain cause you? Why is it so hard…?

It is hard because traditional carpet cleaning products do not remove the cause of the stain, they just mask it. But don’t worry, this hint would avoid you so many headaches… and get rid of the stains.

Step 1

DO NOT SCRUB OR RUB IN the stain. This would cause permanent pile distortion. Pick up solids before cleaning.

Step 2

Blot up as much liquid as possible preferably using a microfibre cloth.

Step 3

Dampen the offending area. You have to make sure that the area is properly moisturised. Do not saturate.

Step 4

Spray Wee Off on the offending area. Allow to air dry. Please do not scrub, we know you don’t want to see the stain anymore, but allow the bacteria in the Wee Off to work. You will be amazed at what these bacteria can do. But it is simple, they are just eating. Whether it is wine, coffee, food, urine, blood or vomit, the bacteria will feed off it.

Step 5

After approximately 10 minutes, blot dry with absorbent material such as white paper towelling or use a cool fan to complete drying. If you don’t bother vacuum it off, the result will be much better.

Carpet powder and your bagless vacuum!

One of the things that we like to try and keep freshly smelling in our homes is the carpet, this can be done a number of ways with regular vacuuming with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a brush roll which agitates the debris loose.

Some also have products that are sprinkled onto the carpet surface in a powder form or spray foam style, both of these styles of product may have an adverse effect of the performance of your bagless vacuum cleaner as they are to be sucked up by your vacuum cleaner when their perscribed method of cleaning is complete.

THEY ALSO TEND TO CLOG UP THE VACUUMS FILTERS!!

The very fine powder or crystallised residue from the cleaning agent sometimes puts a layer of fine particles on the surface of main filter which may restrict or shutdown the AIRFLOW thru the vacuum.

this is when most consumers notice “The Vacuum Doesn’t Suck!”.

this can be corrected with proper maintenance of the filter or if the soiling is very heavy as to completely shutdown the AIRFLOW the filter will need call the vac shop to order a replacement filter with a new one and dirt container/filter area serviced to remove any leftover powder.

Happy Vacuuming.
